The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), of Nigeria has introduced a self-service solution that enables citizens to register for their National Identification Number (NIN), conveniently using their smartphones.

This innovation was unveiled during the commemoration of the 5th Identity Day, jointly organized by the NIMC and the Ministry of Interior in Abuja.

Abisoye Coker-Odusote, the Acting Director General/CEO of the NIMC, emphasised the vital role of identity in the country, highlighting that it extends beyond a mere card or number.

She stated that identity signifies individuals’ existence, entitlements, and place in society. Moreover, it provides access to essential services, social benefits, and opportunities for personal and economic growth.

Coker-Odusote stressed the importance of preserving the integrity and security of identity systems, emphasising the principles of privacy and data protection. She also underscored the need for inclusivity, ensuring that no one is left behind in accessing identity solutions.

Furthermore, Coker-Odusote pointed out that a robust identity management system can contribute significantly to addressing security challenges and providing support to Nigerians, among other benefits.

The introduction of the self-service solution aims to streamline the registration process, addressing common complaints about the time it takes and the delay in receiving feedback after registration.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, spoke to the press following the event and disclosed the government’s plan to harmonise all identity-related data for Nigerians.

This harmonisation effort will include data from sources such as Bank Verification Numbers (BVN), telecommunications companies, the NIMC, voters’ identification, and more.

Tunji-Ojo emphasised that the NIMC is a statutory body entrusted with the responsibility to maintain an identity database for the nation.

The NIMC’s self-service enrollment system will be powered by Banksforte Technology Limited, a subsidiary of Banksforte Group specializing in project management, construction engineering, ICT, and other areas. The application, named “NIMC Contactless Biometric Solution,” is a collaborative effort between NIMC and Banksforte Technology Limited.

The release date for the application is yet to be determined by the NIMC but is expected to be available to Nigerians, including those in the diaspora, as soon as possible.

This application is poised to save citizens from the need to visit physical NIMC offices or partner-agent locations for NIN-related matters, including modifications such as changes in age, which can be done once through the application.
