The surge in Point of Sale (POS) terminal deployment across Nigeria, as indicated by the latest figures from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS), underscores the rapid growth of the country’s digital payment ecosystem.
With 2.68 million POS terminals deployed in March 2024, representing a significant 47.36% Year-on-Year increase, it’s evident that both businesses and consumers are embracing cashless transactions at an accelerating pace.
This trend signifies a shift towards leveraging technology for seamless and efficient financial transactions, fostering innovation and convenience across various sectors.
The January to March breakdown reveals consistent growth, with January 2024 witnessing 2.47 million deployed terminals, February 2024 with 2.58 million, and March 2024 reaching 2.68 million. Each month’s deployment reflects impressive Year-on-Year growth rates, indicating sustained momentum in the adoption of digital payment solutions.
However, alongside the positive growth in deployment, there’s a notable backlog in registered POS terminals awaiting deployment or off-takers.
The number of registered terminals reached 3.44 million in January 2024, 3.6 million in February, and 3.73 million in March. This surge in registered terminals underscores the potential for further expansion and utilization in Nigeria’s digital payment landscape, indicating a growing interest from businesses and financial institutions in adopting POS solutions.
