The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have jointly penned a protest letter to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), condemning the recent tariff hike in the electricity sector.
Signed by NLC President Comrade Joe Ajaero and TUC President Comrade Festus Osifo, the letter was also addressed to key government officials and electricity distribution companies (DISCOs).
In the letter, dated May 12, 2024, the unions gave NERC an ultimatum to reverse the tariff hike or face mass action.
They argued that the hike would exacerbate the already harsh conditions faced by the masses and workers. Describing the decision as morally reprehensible and unjust, the unions vowed not to tolerate such exploitation.
Accusing NERC of failing in its regulatory duties and colluding with DISCOs and generating companies (GENCOs) to impose oppressive pricing regimes, the unions demanded compliance with established legal procedures and respect for the rights of Nigerian citizens.
Failure to heed their demands by Sunday, May 12, 2024, would prompt swift and decisive action from the unions, according to the letter.
