No One Above The Law On Tax Payment In Abuja, Says Wike

No One Above The Law On Tax Payment In Abuja, Says Wike.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has issued a stern warning to residents and property owners in Abuja, declaring that no one is above the law when it comes to tax payment. Speaking on Thursday, the former Rivers State governor reiterated his commitment to enforcing compliance with tax obligations, dismissing the notion of “untouchables” in the capital city as a myth.

In a bold statement, Wike emphasised that all residents, regardless of status, must fulfil their tax duties, asserting, “Heaven will not fall” if enforcement measures are applied. The minister’s remarks, reported by Daily Post Nigeria, come amid a crackdown on property owners in affluent areas such as Asokoro, Maitama, and Wuse 2, where 4,794 land titles have been revoked and properties sealed due to unpaid ground rents. Wike stressed that even “poor men” do not reside in these high-end districts, underscoring the expectation that wealthy owners should settle their overdue obligations.

Addressing resistance to the policy, the FCT minister expressed delight in challenging powerful figures who flout property regulations, stating he derives “joy in stepping on big toes” to ensure adherence to the law. According to Leadership Newspaper and The Nation, Wike made it clear that defaulting property owners, including members of his own political party, face consequences if they fail to pay outstanding ground rents. “Most of the elites own properties overseas, but they remember to pay their taxes there. If they don’t, the government will take over their property. Here in Nigeria, nothing will happen—until now,” he remarked, highlighting a perceived double standard in tax compliance.

The enforcement drive has sparked discussions on social media, with posts on X reflecting Wike’s resolve to hold all accountable. The minister’s stance aligns with his broader mission to reform property regulations and ensure fiscal responsibility in the FCT. While some have resisted the measures, Wike remains unyielding, insisting that compliance is non-negotiable.

As Abuja continues to grow as Nigeria’s political and administrative hub, Wike’s tax enforcement campaign signals a new era of accountability. The minister’s unwavering position—that no one is exempt from the law—underscores his determination to foster equity and strengthen the financial framework of the Federal Capital Territory.
