NPFL Warns Infinix Phones Over Unauthorised Exploitation Of League Assets

NPFL Warns Infinix Phones Over Unauthorised Exploitation Of League Assets.

The Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) has issued a stern warning to Infinix phones, accusing the mobile brand of exploiting the league’s assets without proper authorisation. The NPFL has made it clear that only brands officially affiliated with the league are allowed to participate in activities or display their products at match venues.

This warning follows an incident where Infinix, who sponsored Enyimba FC’s Man-of-the-Match award last season, was reportedly seen during Plateau United’s home game against Niger Tornadoes in Jos, attempting to present a similar award. The NPFL emphasised that this was unauthorised, as the company is not in any formal partnership with the league.

The NPFL has recently reminded all clubs to strictly adhere to the rules regarding sponsorships, as outlined in the league’s official framework. Clubs have been cautioned to ensure any sponsorship deals conform to these regulations to avoid potential conflicts.

In an official statement, the NPFL Chairman, Chief Falilat Ogunkoya-Elegbeleye, expressed concern over these unauthorised activities, stating:

“Last week, we circulated a memo to all clubs, urging them to regularise their marketing activities by adhering to the processes outlined in our Framework and Rules. Infinix, a brand not affiliated with the NPFL, was seen presenting a Man-of-the-Match award, both last season and again in Jos during Matchday 3. We may be left with no option but to take legal action to protect our league assets from such underhanded marketing.”

The NPFL views the Man-of-the-Match award as a key asset of the league, reserved exclusively for sponsors with formal agreements. Elegbeleye further warned that any club facilitating such unauthorised actions would face stiff penalties.

“Sporadic presentations of cheap mobile devices devalue the league and will not be tolerated. Clubs are free to seek sponsorship, but they must comply with the established processes to ensure the league’s assets are not undermined,” he added.

The NPFL’s firm stance aims to safeguard the integrity and commercial value of the league, ensuring that only legitimate partnerships are recognised and promoted.
