Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have reaffirmed their recognition of Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, as the party leader in the state, amidst ongoing tensions with former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.
Wike, who has been at odds with Fubara over control of the PDP’s leadership structure in Rivers State, recently warned PDP governors to stay out of the state’s affairs. He threatened to destabilize their states if they continued backing his estranged protégé.
Despite Wike’s warnings, the Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, stated that the governors would not reverse their decision.
Speaking after a meeting with the PDP’s National Working Committee (NWC), Mohammed confirmed that the governors’ support for Fubara remains firm.
“The decision to support Governor Fubara as the leader of the PDP in Rivers State is final,” Mohammed told journalists. He emphasized that as the incumbent governor, Fubara holds the rightful position as the party’s leader in the state.
He further added that efforts were being made to reconcile Wike and Fubara, acknowledging their mentor-mentee relationship. “We are working behind the scenes to bring them together in the spirit of the PDP’s values of unity and collaboration.”
Mohammed expressed confidence that the situation would be resolved and praised the NWC for backing the decision of the PDP Governors’ Forum in supporting Fubara’s leadership in Rivers State.
