Former presidential candidate and prominent political figure Peter Obi has raised concerns regarding the allocations outlined in the 2024 budget, stating the importance of prioritizing the welfare of Nigerian citizens, particularly the less privileged.
In a statement released on his X handle on Tuesday, Obi stated his persistent reservations about several aspects of the budget, highlighting what he perceives as misguided allocations that could hinder the nation’s development and adversely impact its populace.
Peter Obi particularly criticized the allocation of N15 billion solely for the National Assembly hospital, a figure he deemed excessive and disproportionate compared to allocations for vital healthcare institutions such as The National Hospital and major teaching hospitals across the country. He pointed out the disparity in funding, emphasizing its implications for healthcare accessibility and quality for the general populace.
Peter Obi expressed dismay over the N15.3 billion earmarked for the National Assembly library project and procurement of books, including an e-Library, juxtaposed with the inadequate funding allocated to the long-delayed National Library construction. He questioned the rationale behind prioritizing the former over the latter.
He also raised concerns about the allocation of N10 billion for the construction of car parks and a recreation center for the Senate and House of Representatives, emphasizing the need for greater investment in critical sectors such as science, technology, and innovation. He emphasized the importance of aligning budgetary allocations with national priorities and global trends to foster sustainable development.
