Police Arrest Over 10,000 Suspects In Nationwide Crackdown

The Nigerian Police Force has announced the arrest of 10,852 suspects across the country in the last three months, in a major effort to curb criminal activities. This was disclosed by the Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, during a meeting with senior officers from the rank of Commissioner upwards on Tuesday.

The suspects were apprehended between July and September, and the crimes they are accused of include kidnapping, banditry, and armed robbery. According to the IGP, significant recoveries were made during the operations, with a total of 416 firearms, 3,672 rounds of ammunition, and 178 vehicles seized. Additionally, 369 kidnapped victims were successfully rescued during this period.

IGP Egbetokun highlighted the positive impact of these arrests, noting a marked decrease in crime rates in key areas such as banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, and cybercrime. This achievement reflects the ongoing efforts of the police to ensure the safety and security of citizens nationwide.

In light of the upcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo State, scheduled for 16th November, the IGP also affirmed that the police are fully prepared to ensure a smooth and secure election process. Egbetokun called on officers to build on the successes recorded during the recent Edo elections, urging them to carry out their duties with professionalism and diligence.

“Our mission is to provide a secured environment where voters can freely exercise their democratic rights without fear or intimidation,” he stated. He further emphasised the importance of maintaining a robust security framework throughout the election period.

The Inspector-General also pledged continued collaboration with other security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and other relevant stakeholders to ensure the safety of lives and property before, during, and after the election. Patrols and other security measures will be intensified across the country as the “ember” months progress, ensuring citizens’ safety in the lead-up to the end of the year.

This nationwide crackdown and the coordinated efforts for the upcoming elections reflect the Nigerian Police Force’s commitment to enhancing security and fostering a safer environment for all citizens.
