Postecoglou Takes Responsibility For Spurs’ Inconsistent Start To Season

Postecoglou Takes Responsibility For Spurs’ Inconsistent Start To Season.

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has taken accountability for his team’s inconsistent start to the season, which sees them sitting 10th in the Premier League following a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich. Spurs have now lost five of their 11 league games, leaving them 12 points adrift of leaders Liverpool.

While Tottenham have progressed to the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, their form in other competitions has been mixed. After winning their opening three matches in the Europa League, Spurs fell to Galatasaray last Thursday. Their longest winning streak in the league this season is just two matches, with five consecutive wins across all competitions being their best run so far.

When asked about the team’s struggles, Postecoglou took full responsibility, stating, “It’s just down to me. I’m not getting consistent performances from the players. It’s something I need to address. I’m the person in charge, so that’s usually the way it goes. I take responsibility when their performances don’t meet the levels that they should.”

Spurs’ inconsistency was evident in their recent defeat, as Ipswich took a 2-0 lead by halftime with goals from Sam Szmodics and Liam Delap. Rodrigo Bentancur’s header in the second half provided a glimmer of hope, but Spurs were unable to equalise. Notably, it was the 13th time Tottenham have conceded first at home in 2024, a stat that places them among the Premier League’s worst for early goals conceded on home turf.

Reflecting on the recurring issue of slow starts, Postecoglou said, “There are different reasons [for this]. Today was a bit different to other times. We were way too passive. If you give the opposition that much of a head start, it takes a lot to claw it back.”

Despite the rocky start, Postecoglou remains optimistic about Tottenham’s potential to compete for silverware. Following the North London derby defeat to Arsenal in September, he expressed his belief in long-term success, stating that he “always wins things in [his] second season” at a club. Spurs fans will be hoping his track record holds true as he aims to build consistency and drive the team forward.
