Real Madrid Edge Past Atletico In Dramatic Shootout To Set Up Arsenal Clash

Real Madrid Edge Past Atletico In Dramatic Shootout To Set Up Arsenal Clash.

Real Madrid kept their Champions League dreams alive with a dramatic penalty shootout victory over city rivals Atletico Madrid, securing their place in the quarter-finals where they will face Arsenal.

After a 2-1 first-leg win for Real, the tie was levelled within just 27 seconds of the second leg when Conor Gallagher struck for Atletico, making history as the first Englishman to score in a Madrid derby. Despite the early goal, neither side could find a winner in normal or extra time, forcing the contest to be decided from the spot.

The penalty shootout took a dramatic turn when Julian Alvarez, formerly of Manchester City, saw his effort controversially ruled out. The Argentine forward slipped as he struck the ball, inadvertently making contact twice before it nestled in the net. Initially given, the goal was later disallowed following a VAR review, handing Real Madrid a crucial advantage.

Fede Valverde coolly converted his penalty to put Real 3-1 ahead, and while Atletico keeper Jan Oblak momentarily reignited his side’s hopes by saving Lucas Vazquez’s effort, Marcos Llorente’s miss proved costly. Antonio Rüdiger then stepped up to slot home the decisive penalty, sealing a 4-2 shootout victory for Los Blancos.

Frustration For Atletico, But Real March On

Atletico will feel hard done by after producing a disciplined and resolute defensive display that limited Real to few clear-cut chances. They had not lost a home knockout tie since 1997, and for much of the game, it appeared that record would remain intact.

At the other end, the lively Alvarez was denied three times by Thibaut Courtois, while Kylian Mbappé, largely kept quiet by the Atletico defence, won a penalty after being brought down by Clément Lenglet. However, Vinícius Júnior, who had converted all seven of his previous penalties for Real, blazed his effort over the bar, keeping the match finely poised.

Despite their struggles, Real Madrid maintained their 100% record against Atletico in penalty shootouts, adding another chapter to their European dominance over their city rivals. The 14-time champions, who triumphed over Atletico in the 2014 and 2016 finals, now set their sights on Arsenal as they continue their quest for a record-extending 16th Champions League title.
