Rivers Utd Striker Nwagua Plays Down Title Talks

Nwagua believes title race is not yet over

Leaders Rivers United might be top of the table with 67 points and few matches to go has they look pretty good for the title but their striker, Nyima Nwagua says the team isn’t even thinking of the title but focusing on winning all their remaining games.

Rivers united currently sits comfortably on top of the Nigeria Professional Football League table with 67 points, seven points  ahead of second-placed Plateau United and a massive 16 points ahead of third-placed Enugu rangers with few matches to go.

Despite the gap, Rivers united striker Nwagua says he and his teammates are more focused now than when the league started.

According to him “We are focused on our remaining matches. We have done well to this point and we will not allow complacency to set in. We (the players) are not taking anything for granted,” the former Kano Pillars striker said.

“I know we are not there yet, we are not satisfied. There are still few matches to go. This is football and you do not take things for granted. I have not seen Rivers United crested on the trophy so we keep working because we are not there yet.

“For this, we will keep working until the Nigeria Football Federation, the League Management Company and the whole of Nigeria comes to Port-Harcourt to give us the trophy.

“It is at that point we will relax and know we have won the title,” he said.

Nwagua also said that the secret of their successes so far this season has been down to hard work and commitment.

The 28-year-old, who has scored five goals for the Port-Harcourt side after joining them from Kano Pillars this season, enthused that the calibre of players in the team and the bond between them is the major factor in their charge to the title.

“I didn’t want to leave Pillars but after I won the Federation Cup title with them I decided to seek a new challenge and come to Rivers who have been seeking me out for a while,” he revealed.

“I am enjoying my time here and I must say the secret behind our good form this season has been God, hard work and dedication.

“The crop of players now at Rivers United, just like the coaches will always say, we are willing to learn, we are willing to work and we are willing to learn.

“That has been our secret and we have been working hard and you know with God at some point he will start giving you what you worked for. Hard work has kept us this far, “Nwagua added.

Rivers United will be playing against Abia Warriors in Porthacourt to extend their lead on top of the League table.
