Rodri Wins Men’s Ballon d’Or As Football’s Top Honour Returns To Midfield

Rodri Wins Men’s Ballon d’Or As Football’s Top Honour Returns To Midfield.

Manchester City and Spain midfielder Rodri has been awarded the prestigious Men’s Ballon d’Or, marking the first time a City player has claimed the prize. The 28-year-old triumphed following a remarkable season, during which he lost only one game across club and country and played a pivotal role in Spain’s Euro 2024 victory.

In addition to his national success, Rodri enjoyed an outstanding season with Manchester City, where he helped secure the Premier League, UEFA Super Cup, and Club World Cup titles. The award ceremony, held in Paris, saw Rodri celebrated for his contributions on both fronts, as he claimed the top spot over Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr., with Jude Bellingham finishing in third place – the highest ranking for an English player since Frank Lampard’s second-place finish in 2005.

Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win carries additional significance in light of Spain’s legacy, as he dedicated his award to the nation’s football community. “Today is not just a victory for me but for Spanish football, for so many players who have deserved this award,” he said. Rodri received the trophy on crutches, following an anterior cruciate ligament injury sustained in September.

In an emotional speech, Rodri emphasised the triumph of midfielders, often unsung in their roles, stating, “Today, football has recognised those who work in the shadows. I’m just a regular guy, driven by values and hard work, and I’m grateful to everyone who has supported me on this journey.”

Further Honours on Ballon d’Or Night

The Ballon d’Or ceremony also celebrated other top talents in football. England captain Harry Kane, now at Bayern Munich, shared the Gerd Muller Trophy with Kylian Mbappe after both scored an impressive 52 goals in all competitions last season. Kane, who finished 10th in the Ballon d’Or rankings, accepted the award alone, with Mbappe absent.

Real Madrid took the honours as Club of the Year, while their manager Carlo Ancelotti won the Johan Cruyff Trophy for Best Coach. However, in an unusual turn of events, no representatives from Real Madrid attended, reportedly due to reports that Vinicius Jr. would not secure the Ballon d’Or win.

         Emerging Talent Recognised

Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal won the Kopa Trophy, awarded to the best player under 21. At just 17, Yamal achieved a milestone as the youngest player to claim the trophy, after a breakout season with Barcelona and a record-breaking performance at the Euros.

Emiliano Martinez Secures Second Consecutive Yashin Trophy

Argentina’s Emiliano Martinez, currently playing for Aston Villa, was named the top goalkeeper for the second year running, becoming the first player to win the Yashin Trophy back-to-back. Martinez was crucial in Aston Villa’s successful campaign to secure a Champions League spot and contributed significantly to Argentina’s Copa America triumph.

Rodri’s win this year, alongside these accomplishments from around the football world, underlines the global reach and evolving landscape of the sport, with midfielders and defensive roles gaining long-overdue recognition. The evening stood as a testament to football’s shared legacy and the profound contributions of players from every position.
