Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has described Lagos State as a “Yoruba United States” that continues to set the pace for Nigeria’s progress and development.
The governor made this statement while addressing participants at the South-West Citizen–Government Engagement Summit held in Akure, Ondo State, on Wednesday.
The summit brought together prominent leaders from across the South-West region, including governors, traditional rulers, political figures, and business leaders, to discuss regional cooperation and development. Sanwo-Olu said Lagos remains the heartbeat of Nigeria’s economy and a model for unity and diversity.
“I stand here not only as a humble leader among the South-West governors, but also as the governor of the largest population in our country, the economic and commercial nerve centre of our country, the state of aquatic splendour, a state that houses almost every tribe, religion and race of our country,” he said. “But more importantly, Lagos is a Yoruba United States that continues to reimagine and set the pace for our nation.”
The governor noted that Lagos represents the diversity, innovation, and resilience of the Yoruba people and serves as a symbol of how regional cooperation can foster national growth. He emphasized that the South-West must continue to build on shared values and work collectively toward a prosperous Nigeria.
In a post shared on his social media handles, Sanwo-Olu urged the South-West to once again lead Nigeria’s renewal through unity, collaboration, and a shared vision. “We must strengthen our ties and work together to build a future that reflects the greatness of our people,” he wrote.
The summit, which focused on deepening citizen–government engagement, underscored the importance of regional solidarity in advancing national progress and promoting sustainable governance in Nigeria.
