South Africa Left Out League Top Scorer Mabasa In World Cup Qualifiers Squad

South Africa’s Provisional Squad for World Cup Qualifiers Announced, Mabasa Absent

In a move that has raised eyebrows among football enthusiasts, Tshegofatso Mabasa, the prolific striker leading the scoring charts in South Africa’s DStv Premiership, has been notably omitted from the 36-man provisional squad unveiled by national team coach Hugo Broos. This squad is slated to compete in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Nigeria in Uyo and Zimbabwe at home.

Mabasa, whose scintillating form for Orlando Pirates has seen him net an impressive 15 goals, seemed a likely inclusion in the squad. However, Broos, the Belgian tactician, has opted to call up a blend of experience and emerging talent, leaning heavily on players who featured prominently during South Africa’s impressive run to third place in the recent Africa Cup of Nations, where they were eventually halted by the Nigeria Super Eagles.

Among the key names on the roster is Lyle Foster, a striker from Burnley, whose absence during the Africa Cup of Nations was attributed to mental health concerns. Foster’s return to the squad adds depth and experience to the frontline, bolstering Bafana’s attacking options.

Another notable inclusion is Evidence Makgopa, Mabasa’s teammate at Orlando Pirates, who played an instrumental role in securing bronze for Bafana in the Africa Cup of Nations held in Cote d’Ivoire. Makgopa’s presence brings a blend of youthfulness and skill to the squad.

Broos has also extended invitations to promising talents like Relebohile Mofokeng, the 19-year-old attacker from Pirates, whose breakout season has seen him impress with four goals in 35 league and cup appearances. Mofokeng’s inclusion highlights Broos’s emphasis on nurturing young talent and injecting fresh energy into the squad.

The provisional squad, which will be trimmed down to 23 players in the coming days, reflects Broos’s strategic approach to team selection, balancing seasoned campaigners with emerging stars. The upcoming matches against Nigeria in Lagos and Zimbabwe in Bloemfontein present crucial opportunities for South Africa to solidify their position in Group C, currently trailing behind Rwanda.

With the race for World Cup qualification heating up, South Africa aims to secure crucial points against formidable opponents, knowing that a top finish in their group could pave the way for a historic entry into the 48-team World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the US.

The footballing world awaits eagerly as Bafana prepares to showcase their prowess on the international stage, fueled by a mix of experience, talent, and the hunger for World Cup glory.
