South West traditional rulers have expressed their gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for establishing the South West Development Commission (SWDC).

This landmark decision is seen as a crucial step towards addressing the region’s developmental needs. The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, commended Tinubu for his visionary leadership in establishing the SWDC and appointing competent individuals to lead the commission.

The SWDC aims to address infrastructure gaps, ecological issues, and security challenges across the South West region. According to Dr. Adewummi Oriyomi Onanuga, Deputy Chief Whip and Leader of the Southwest Caucus, “The establishment of the South West Development Commission is a crucial step towards equitable development. It will provide the necessary framework to tackle the infrastructural deficits and environmental challenges that have long hindered our region’s progress.”

The commission will receive and manage funds from the Federation Account, donations, and gifts for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of roads, houses, and other infrastructural damages suffered by the region. It will also tackle ecological problems and other related environmental or developmental challenges.

The Olowo of Owo, HRH Ajibade Gbadegesin Ogunoye II, praised Tinubu for appointing Dr. Charles Akinola as the Managing Director of the SWDC, describing him as a “square peg in a square hole” due to his experience and qualifications. The traditional rulers believe that the SWDC will promote economic growth, cultural renaissance, and regional development.

The Senate had passed the bill for the establishment of the SWDC, which was sponsored by Olufemi Fakeye and 80 others. The commission’s establishment is expected to accelerate the socioeconomic development of the South West states.

The Southwest Caucus of the House of Representatives expressed their commitment to ensuring the bill’s swift concurrence by the Senate, enabling it to be enacted into law and commence its vital work in transforming the Southwest region. According to Rt. Hon. James Faleke, Chairman of the Southwest Caucus, “This bill represents a collective and multipartisan effort by all Members of the House of Representatives from the Southwest states. It underscores our shared commitment to addressing the unique challenges faced by our region and ensuring sustainable development.”

The establishment of the SWDC is seen as a significant step towards equitable development across Nigeria. With the commission’s expected focus on resolving infrastructural and ecological issues, the South West region is poised for rapid development.
