Super Falcons Soar With 3-0 Victory Over Tunisia in WAFCON 2024 Opener.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons launched their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) 2024 campaign in spectacular fashion, securing a commanding 3-0 victory against Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday. The nine-time champions, under the guidance of head coach Justine Madugu, delivered a dominant performance to kick off their ‘Mission X’ for a record-extending tenth continental title.

The Super Falcons wasted no time asserting their authority, with star striker Asisat Oshoala opening the scoring in the fourth minute. A pinpoint cross from Rinsola Babajide found Oshoala, who rose highest to head the ball past the Tunisian goalkeeper, setting the tone for Nigeria’s relentless attacking display. The team’s control was evident throughout the first half, as they dictated the tempo with sharp passing and composure on the ball.

Just before the break, Babajide herself got on the scoresheet, doubling Nigeria’s lead in the 45th minute. Initially disallowed for a suspected foul by Oshoala in the build-up, the goal was awarded after a VAR review confirmed no infringement, sending the Super Falcons into half-time with a 2-0 advantage. The second half saw Nigeria maintain their pressure, with wave after wave of attacks testing Tunisia’s resolute defence. In the 84th minute, Chinwendu Ihezuo sealed the victory with a composed left-footed finish into the bottom corner, capping a stellar team performance.

Coach Madugu praised his squad’s hunger and team spirit, stating that the victory reflected their focus on achieving ‘Mission X’. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who led by example with her dynamic play, expressed confidence in the team’s preparation, despite limited time to gel as a unit. The Super Falcons’ strong showing was bolstered by standout performances from goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who kept a clean sheet, and defenders Ashleigh Plumptre and Osinachi Ohale, who neutralised Tunisia’s counter-attacking threats.

Tunisia, ranked 89th globally, showed moments of resilience but struggled to match Nigeria’s intensity and quality. Despite a tactical setup aimed at frustrating the West African giants, the Carthage Eagles could not prevent the Super Falcons from showcasing their attacking firepower and defensive solidity.

This victory marks a significant step for Nigeria, who are determined to reclaim the WAFCON title after a disappointing fourth-place finish in 2022. With Group B also featuring Algeria and Botswana, the Super Falcons have set a strong foundation for their campaign. Fans across Nigeria celebrated the result, with the team’s performance igniting hopes of a triumphant tournament run.

The Super Falcons will now turn their attention to their next group stage match, buoyed by this emphatic win and a renewed sense of purpose. As ‘Mission X’ gathers momentum, Nigeria’s quest for continental glory is well and truly underway.
