TCN Boosts National Grid with New 60MVA Transformer in Katsina

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced the commissioning of a new 60 megavolt-amperes (MVA) power transformer at its 132/33kV Kankia Transmission Substation in Katsina State.

The installation, which took place on Friday, July 12, 2024, is expected to add 48 megawatts (MW) to the national grid.

In a statement released via its official X handle on Sunday, TCN emphasized that this development will increase the availability of bulk electricity for the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (DisCo) to distribute to customers in Kankia and surrounding areas.

“This commissioning further attests to TCN’s commitment towards further increasing its capability to wheel more bulk electricity to distribution load centres nationwide,” the company stated.

The upgrade comes at a crucial time for Nigeria’s power sector. TCN reported that in the week of July 4, 2024, the country’s peak electricity generation stood at 4,723.30MW, showing a decline from the 4,800MW recorded on May 3. This year has already seen at least five national grid collapses, resulting in widespread outages.

Despite these challenges, TCN’s latest infrastructure improvement demonstrates ongoing efforts to enhance the stability and capacity of Nigeria’s power supply. The new transformer in Katsina is expected to play a significant role in bolstering the national grid and improving electricity distribution in the region.

As the country continues to grapple with power supply issues, investments in transmission infrastructure like this are crucial steps toward achieving a more reliable and efficient electrical grid for Nigeria.
