Jannik Sinner Cleared of Wrongdoing After Failed Drug Tests.
Men’s world number one tennis player, Jannik Sinner, has been cleared of any fault or negligence by an independent tribunal following two failed drug tests in March, according to the International Tennis Integrity Authority (ITIA) on Tuesday.
The tribunal accepted Sinner’s explanation that the anabolic agent clostebol had inadvertently entered his system through a member of his support team during massages and sports therapy. The team member had been using an over-the-counter spray containing clostebol to treat a small wound on their own skin, which subsequently contaminated Sinner.
Despite testing positive, Sinner successfully appealed the provisional suspensions that were applied after each test, allowing him to continue competing. The ITIA has stated that the decision could be subject to appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the Italian Anti-Doping Agency (NADO Italia).
Sinner, who recently claimed victory at the Cincinnati Open, expressed relief at the tribunal’s ruling, noting that the amount of clostebol found in his system was less than a billionth of a gram. He stated that he would continue to ensure strict compliance with the ITIA’s anti-doping regulations, both for himself and his team.
The ATP also welcomed the ruling, emphasising the importance of integrity in tennis and the need for players and their teams to be extremely cautious with any products or treatments they use.
Sinner, the current Australian Open champion, is set to participate in the US Open, with the main draw beginning on 26 August.
