Novak Djokovic’s pursuit of his 100th career title was halted in Shanghai as Jannik Sinner secured a high-calibre victory in the Masters final. Sinner, the world number one, continued his exceptional form this season with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win over the Serbian veteran, who at 37 was aiming to add a fifth Shanghai title to his illustrious record.
Djokovic, already a 24-time Grand Slam champion, had hoped to become just the third man in history—after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer—to reach the milestone of 100 career titles. Despite the defeat, Djokovic remained philosophical: “I have got to keep striving to make it happen somewhere in the near future… Right now, it’s really about Slams and about seeing how far I can push the bar for myself.”
Sinner, 23, who has enjoyed an extraordinary season, continued to build on his growing reputation. The Italian star has now won seven titles this year, including the Australian Open and the US Open, and has achieved a remarkable 65 wins from 71 matches in 2024. His dominant form, however, remains somewhat overshadowed by an ongoing doping case, despite initial clearance of any wrongdoing.
While Djokovic missed out on another landmark, Sinner’s victory further cements his place among tennis’ elite, adding to what has been a breakthrough year for the young Italian.
