Tinubu Rolling Out Major Measures To Tackle Terrorism — Alake

President Bola Tinubu’s administration says it is implementing a series of major measures aimed at tackling terrorism and strengthening security across Nigeria.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, explained that the Federal Government has adopted a combined military and socio economic approach to address insecurity more effectively.

Speaking during an engagement in Abuja, Alake said the administration has carried out key reforms within the security sector since 2023, including the restructuring of leadership in several security agencies. He stated that data from international organisations shows that Nigeria has recorded its lowest level of security incidents in more than ten years. According to him, “We rely on empirical verification, not emotional reactions.”

The minister stressed that terrorism in Nigeria is not driven purely by religion but is deeply rooted in economic and political factors. He said this understanding is shaping the government’s approach to resolving insecurity. Alake added, “If there is no society, there is no press. We must protect the sanctity of our nation to practise our profession in peace.”

Alake appealed to the media to support the fight against terrorism by reporting responsibly and avoiding headlines that may strengthen negative narratives. He noted that the way some media houses report security issues could discourage the military. “When terrorists kill soldiers the headline screams it. But when the military kills terrorists the report says the military claims to have done so,” he stated.

He further warned that some internal and foreign groups are promoting divisive narratives for selfish interests, urging journalists to resist being used as tools for destabilisation. Alake maintained that unity, factual reporting and national security awareness are necessary for peace and growth.

The minister revealed that the government is currently strengthening intelligence led operations, improving cooperation between security agencies and communities, expanding social welfare support and promoting economic inclusion in vulnerable areas as part of efforts to curb radicalisation and banditry. He assured Nigerians that the government is committed to long term security reforms to ensure safety and stability nationwide.
