Nigeria Emerges Champions at African U-19 Girls Beach Volleyball Nations Championship.

Nigeria has triumphed as the champions of the 2024 African U-19 Girls Beach Volleyball Nations Championship, held in Morocco. The duo of Esther Mbah and Pamela Bawa secured a commanding 2-0 victory (21-8, 21-8) over Morocco in the women’s final at Martil Beach, Tanger.

DOMINANT PERFORMANCE IN GROUP STAGES And SEMIFINALS

In the group stages, Nigeria displayed their prowess by defeating Congo DR 2-0 (21-13, 21-6) and Morocco Team B 2-0 (21-8, 21-11) to top Pool B. Their impressive run continued in the semifinals, where they convincingly beat Gambia 2-0 (21-3, 21-9).

CAPTAIN’S PRIDE AND FUTURE PROSPECTS

Esther Mbah, the captain of Nigeria’s U-19 beach volleyball team, expressed her delight at winning the championship and qualifying for the 2024 FIVB U-19 Beach Volleyball World Championship in China, scheduled from 27th August to 1st September. She praised the Nigeria Volleyball Federation, led by Engineer Musa Nimrod, for their support and for promoting Nigerian volleyball on the continental stage.

Mbah, an African Games bronze medallist, said, “All glory to God for allowing us to represent the country at the U-19 African Beach Volleyball Nations Championship. Winning the gold medal for Nigeria after the African Games means a lot to me; we fought hard and got the desired results. Preparations for the World Championship will begin in earnest; the annual Beach Tour in Nigeria will help us fine-tune some of our lapses and our coaches have the technical abilities to help us grow.”

She extended her gratitude to the Federation, her coaches, senior players, and supporters for their unwavering support. “My coaches, senior players, friends, family, and well-wishers have been praying for the success of the team; my prayer is that God will continue to protect us all,” she added.

OVERCOMING SETBACKS AND LOOKING FORWARD

Reflecting on the team’s narrow miss at the 2024 Olympic Games qualifiers, Mbah acknowledged the pain of the defeat but highlighted the valuable experience gained. “It was a painful defeat in the final of the qualifiers. We led in the first set of the game but the Egyptians were more experienced, levelled up, and got the sole ticket to the Olympic Games.”

BRONZE FOR NIGERIA’S U-19 BOYS TEAM

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s men’s team also made their mark by winning a bronze medal at the recently concluded 2024 African U-19 Boys Beach Volleyball Nations Championship in Cote d’Ivoire. The pair of Victor Eze and Ndifrike George secured a 2-0 victory (21-11, 21-13) against Congo in the men’s third-place match.

FUTURE OUTLOOK

With the 2024 FIVB U-19 Beach Volleyball World Championship on the horizon, Nigeria’s beach volleyball teams are set to continue their rigorous training and participation in local tournaments to ensure they remain competitive on the global stage. The unwavering support from the Nigeria Volleyball Federation and the dedication of the players and coaches signal a bright future for the sport in Nigeria.
