Wayne Rooney Lands New Coaching Job At Championship Side Plymouth Argyle.
Former England captain Wayne Rooney has been appointed as the new head coach of Championship side Plymouth Argyle, succeeding Ian Foster who was sacked on April 1 after a poor run of results.
Rooney, 38, takes on his fourth head coach role after being dismissed by Birmingham City on January 2 following a brief and challenging tenure. Under his management, Birmingham struggled, losing nine of 15 games and ultimately facing relegation to League One.
Previously, Rooney managed Derby County, guiding them to Championship survival in his first season despite significant financial difficulties and a points deduction. He later moved to DC United in the United States before his stint at Birmingham City.
Rooney expressed excitement about the new role: “Taking this role at Plymouth Argyle feels like the perfect next step in my career. I look forward to helping to build a squad of players to play expansive football and entertain the Green Army.”
Plymouth chairman Simon Hallett praised Rooney’s passion and vision for the club: “Wayne showed himself to be a passionate, intelligent, and knowledgeable candidate with an appetite to prove himself. His ambitions align perfectly with ours.”
Rooney’s backroom staff will include first-team coaches Kevin Nancekivell and Simon Ireland, and goalkeeping coach Darryl Flahavan, with further additions expected.
